Spring Ahead

With fall and winter almost a thing of the past we reminisce. Our pile of photographs to be filed are greatly reduced under the competent hands of Sister Catherine. Her projects are many and being completed one by one. Sister is spending her last day with us today, March 13th. We are grateful for her faithful editing and typing of the monthly Community Annals which are now computerized. Many pictures and newspaper articles have been processed under her competency. Ours are not only the daily paper but the publications of our missionaries, other diocesan and special media printings where our sisters minister.

Sister Vickie has put much data on our computer programs and is in the process of compiling a program that will best fit our MSJ Ursuline needs. Sister will begin working full-time on Monday, March 23rd.

I am conducting a practicum for two history majors from Brescia College whose ambition it is to work in Museum Archives. We meet twice a week for three hours. Ron and Elizabeth are doing nice work and will be an asset to any archives. Catherine Ball, an honor student at OCHS, is volunteering time in the archives, this semester under the "Christians In Action" program.

We have planned an Archives Tour for March 26th. To acquaint Sr. Vickie with other Archives of Religious Collections we will visit the Archdiocesan Archives and the Ursuline Archives in Louisville, Mount Saint Francis and Benedictine Archives in Indiana.

Last year the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church published a document on Church Archives: The Pastoral Function of Church Archives. It is serving to stimulate an on-going dialogue between all those working directly or professionally with archive collections, Church authorities and administrators as well as the entire Church community at large. It provides churches around the world a way to identify with the issues treated. In August the Association of Catholic Diocesan Archivists will sponsor a three day workshop in Mundeilein, Illinois. The proposed title of the sessions with three presentations will feature Appraisal and Access to Church Records in Germany, Israel, and the Netherlands. The International Council on Archives, Section on Archives of Churches and Religious Denominations and the SAA Archivists of Religious Collections Section are invited. I'll be glad to send further information if anyone is interested.

The National Reunion of Maryland Catholics to Kentucky will hold their fourth meeting on July 17, 18, and 19, 1998, at Brescia College in Owensboro. This group has grown to around 600+ of all denominations. Most archivists are interested in genealogy and anyone is invited. Again, if you wish, I can send more information.

I hope to see you at the John James Audubon State Resort Park in Henderson for our Spring Meeting. Until then keep the Archival Spirit soaring.
