Filson Club News

Things keep rolling along at the Filson Club, but a couple of changes have occurred recently. On November 1, 1997, Mary Jean Kinsman retired as curator of photographs and prints. Subsequently, that department was merged with the manuscript departments to form the special collections department. The merger has gone smoothly, and Trace Kirkwood (assistant curator of special collections), Becky Rice (special collections assistant), and I are learning more and more about photographs and prints. Of added assistance to us has been Mike Veach, who has been working part-time in the department.

Last fall a major acquisition was made when the Filson acquired the papers of Union Major Don Carlos Buell. Currently being cataloged, the information about Buell, the Civil War, and about Kentucky during the war, especially re: Perryville, is excellent. The collection contains approximately four cubic feet and contains papers concerning Buell's pre-civil war army career, the Civil War, and his post-war career as a businessman in Muhlenberg County and writer about the war and his role in it. In addition to this collection, a number of other Civil War related acquisitions have been made, including two collections of soldiers from Hancock County who served in the Third Kentucky Cavalry, USA

Preservation Awareness Book Published

Promoting Preservation Awareness in Libraries: A Sourcebook for Academic, Public, School and Special Collections, edited by Jeanne M. Drewes and Julie A. Page was published in Fall 1997 by Greenwood Press. This sourcebook includes articles by over 40 contributors. It includes theoretical as well as programmatic articles. Case studies support "anchor articles" which focus on different institution types and various patron needs. Becky Ryder, from the University of Kentucky, contributed a case study that described the 1993 Preservation Awareness Month, and the week-long "Jammin' with Preservation" event held in 1995. Throughout the book, the authors have included examples of flyers, posters, logos, and brochures used in patron education. The chapter that deals with Special Collections and Archives provides rich detail about preservation education in historic sites, local records agencies, academic divisions, and special archives. A full range of topics are covered from security to care and handling. Promoting Preservation Awareness in Libraries, is part of the Greenwood Library Management Collection.
