William T. Young Library Opening

The dedication of the William T. Young Library will occur on Friday, April 3. The Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, President Emeritus of the University of Notre Dame, will be the featured speaker. After 35 years as University President, Father Hesburgh retired in 1987. He remains a strong advocate for higher education in national and international forums, and over the last 50 years, he has held 15 presidential appointments. At the Young Library dedication, Father Hesburgh will receive his 136th honorary degree.

The ceremony which begins at 11 a.m., will be downlinked to all community colleges in Kentucky. Additionally, an insert about the new library will appear in all Kentucky newspapers during the week before the dedication.

Following the dedication ceremonies, which will also feature a speech by the building's namesake, horse breeder and businessman, William T. Young, a ribbon cutting ceremony will mark the opening of the Library. Services in Young Library will be limited during the remainder of the spring semester. Collections from the Margaret I. King Library, the Agricultural Sciences Library, the Biological Sciences Library and the Medical Center Library will move during the summer. The William T. Young Library expects to be fully operational by the 1998 fall semester.

The building features expansive study and reading space, ample computing facilities, and an exhibit of 30 historic quilts from the Ohio Valley region. 1.2 million volumes will be housed in the new library, and a large audio-visual distributed education media center will serve students throughout the commonwealth.

Following the dedication and opening of Young Library, UK library staff will turn their attention to the renovation of the Margaret I. King Library which will be the future home of a Fine Arts Library, a Science/ Engineering Library and the Libraries' Special Collections and Archives Division.
